Best Time to Visit Kanab: Season by Season Guide (2026)
Because Kanab sits in the high desert on the edge of the Colorado Plateau, the weather here can swing a lot, sometimes within a single day. That is why the season you choose decides how comfortable your hikes are, how safe the slot canyons are and how good your chances are for The Wave.
For example, we visited in early October 2026 and had cool mornings, hot afternoons and one very lucky dry window between flash floods. In this guide, I therefore share the best time to visit Kanab season by season, month by month and for each highlight, from The Wave to Peekaboo Slot Canyon.
If you are still planning your trip, my Kanab itinerary shows how we spent our three nights.
Let’s get into it.

Best Time to Visit Kanab: The Short Answer
In short, the best time to visit Kanab is spring (April and May) and fall (late September to October). During these months, the days are warm enough for long hikes, the nights are cool and the monsoon season is usually over or has not started yet.
- Best overall: April, May, late September and October
- Hottest: June to August
- Flash flood risk: monsoon season, usually July to mid September
- Quietest: December to February
- Best odds for The Wave: winter months, with fewer applicants
Early October in Kanab. Our favorite time of year.Fall in Kanab: Our Favorite Season
We went in early October, and I would go at the same time again. However, mornings were cold, only 8°C (46°F) at the start of our UTV tour. By midday, on the other hand, it was 30°C (86°F). That swing sounds extreme, but it is perfect if you plan smart: start early, hike in the cool hours and spend the afternoon at the pool.
However, fall has one catch. The monsoon season usually ends around mid September, but in 2026 it lasted noticeably longer. We were lucky and had a dry window for The Wave, and shortly after we left there were flash floods again. If you go in September or early October, keep your plans flexible.
Tip: Pack layers. So pack a warm jacket and long pants for the morning, and a T-shirt for the afternoon. After all, the buggies on UTV tours are open on the sides, and the morning air is cold.
Spring in Kanab
Besides fall, April and May are the other sweet spot. The temperatures are pleasant, the days get longer and the desert can be surprisingly green. It is also one of the busiest times, especially around spring break and holidays, so book your hotel early.
March is cooler and quieter, but the weather can be unpredictable, and dirt roads may still be muddy after late winter storms.
Summer in Kanab
In summer, however, June to August is hot. Especially on routes like The Wave, with almost no shade, the heat is a real danger. If you visit in summer, start every hike at sunrise, take more water than you think you need and plan indoor or pool time for the afternoon.
In addition, from about July to mid September, sometimes longer, afternoon thunderstorms can cause flash floods. A storm many miles away can send water through slot canyons and washes even when the sky above you is blue. As a result, dirt roads like House Rock Valley Road can become impassable. Turn on weather and emergency alerts on your phone, check the forecast every evening and every morning, and stay out of slot canyons and tunnels when rain is possible.
Winter in Kanab
However, December to February is the quietest time in Kanab. It is cold, there can be snow, especially at higher elevations like Bryce Canyon, and dirt roads can be muddy or icy. Also, the days are short.
Still, there are far fewer visitors and fewer applicants for The Wave lottery. If you do not mind the cold and can handle shorter days, winter can be a smart choice for photographers and anyone chasing a permit.

Best Time for The Wave, Peekaboo and More
The Wave
Spring and fall have the best hiking weather but the most applicants. Winter has the best odds but cold, short days. Summer has fewer applicants because the heat is brutal. Whatever month you choose, however, start at sunrise. For example, we left Kanab in the dark and were glad we did.

Peekaboo Slot Canyon and the Great Chamber
So book a morning tour. As a result, the light in the Great Chamber is at its best, and you beat the crowds. Since our tour started at 8:30 AM, we had the Great Chamber to ourselves for a long time.

Zion and the North Rim
Spring and fall are also the best seasons for Zion, but they are busy. Also, road closures can happen at any time. When we were in Kanab in October 2026, Zion’s east entrance was closed. Similarly, the North Rim of the Grand Canyon is seasonal: it reopened in May 2026 after the 2025 Dragon Bravo Fire, and the season usually ends in the fall. Always check the National Park Service website before you go.
