Kanab Utah Travel Guide: Everything You Need to Know (2026)

The Wave, slot canyons, sand dunes and the best base in southern Utah, from someone who keeps coming back.

I first came to Kanab eleven years ago, when we won The Wave lottery for the first time. Back then, however, it was a tiny town with a handful of places to stay, and breakfast was a gas station coffee and a granola bar. When I came back for three nights in October 2026, Kanab had grown into one of the best bases in the American Southwest.

This Kanab Utah travel guide brings together everything I have learned on my visits: where Kanab is, what to do, where to stay and eat, when to go and how many days you need. In addition, every section links to a detailed guide, so you can dive deeper wherever you like.

In short, think of it as your starting point for planning a trip to Kanab Utah.

Let’s get into it.

Kanab Utah at a Glance

First of all, Kanab sits in southern Utah, right on the border with Arizona and on the edge of the Colorado Plateau. The local visitor guide calls it Base Camp Kanab, and that is exactly what it is: one small town with national parks, slot canyons, sand dunes and the famous Wave all within a short drive.

At a Glance
  • Location: southern Utah, on the Arizona border
  • Nearest big airport: Las Vegas, about three and a half hours away
  • Best for: The Wave, slot canyons, UTV tours, Zion and Bryce day trips
  • Best time: spring and fall
  • Stay: at least three nights
  • Car: an SUV or high clearance vehicle makes life easier
From Kanab to Distance Drive time
Peekaboo Slot Canyon staging area about 9 mi / 14 km about 15 min
Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park about 20 mi / 32 km about 30 min
Zion National Park, east entrance about 30 mi / 48 km about 35 min
Zion Canyon and Springdale about 43 mi / 69 km about 1 hr
The Wave, Wire Pass Trailhead about 49 mi / 79 km about 1 hr
Lake Powell about 65 mi / 105 km about 1 hr 15 min
Bryce Canyon National Park about 77 mi / 124 km about 1 hr 30 min

Tip: Unpack once and stay at least three nights. After all, Kanab works best as a base, not as a one night stop on the way to somewhere else.

Kanab Then and Now

Eleven years ago, however, Kanab was a really small town. So we rented a little cabin without breakfast, because there was hardly anything else. Today, by contrast, there are many more hotels, fast food chains like Wendy’s, Subway and Pizza Hut, several big supermarkets, a lot more restaurants and a small main street with shops. That makes Kanab a much easier and more comfortable base than it used to be.

Top Things to Do in Kanab Utah

The Wave

Above all, it is the most famous permit hike in the Southwest, about an hour from Kanab. However, only 64 people per day get in through two lotteries. Even so, we have won twice, eleven years apart.

Peekaboo Slot Canyon and the Great Chamber

In fact, our self-drive UTV tour through deep red sand to a glowing slot canyon and a giant sandstone alcove was one of the highlights of our trip.

More Highlights

Besides, there are the Belly of the Dragon tunnel, the Coral Pink Sand Dunes, the UTV trails, Buckskin Gulch from the same trailhead as The Wave, and day trips to Zion and Bryce Canyon.

Where to Stay in Kanab

As for us, we stayed at the SpringHill Suites by Marriott Kanab: new, modern, with a pool, a whirlpool and views of the red cliffs, and almost next door to the visitor center. Most hotels sit along Center Street, so you can walk to restaurants in the evening.

Where to Eat in Kanab

Restaurant Tip
Los Tapatios

Simply put, a Mexican family restaurant with fantastic food and huge portions. We went twice. It is always busy, so in the evening try to be there before 6 PM.

Best Time to Visit Kanab

In general, spring and fall are the best seasons. For example, we visited in early October and had 8°C (46°F) in the morning and 30°C (86°F) at midday. Summer is very hot, and during the monsoon season flash floods are a real danger. On top of that, the monsoon lasted longer than usual in 2026.

How Many Days in Kanab

Plan at least three nights, like we did: one day for The Wave, one rest day and a UTV tour to Peekaboo on the last morning. If you have more time, add a fourth night for Zion or the Coral Pink Sand Dunes. Many travelers also combine Kanab with Bryce Canyon, about an hour and a half away.

Practical Tips for Kanab

Know before you go

6 Things I Wish Everyone Knew
01
🚙 Rent the Right Car
Above all, House Rock Valley Road to The Wave is bumpy and rocky, and Peekaboo needs a UTV tour or 4WD.
02
⛈️ Watch the Weather
Especially in summer, flash floods are a real risk in slot canyons and washes. So turn on weather alerts on your phone.
03
📵 Expect Patchy Signal
Cell service is limited outside town. Download offline maps before you head out.
04
📅 Book Early
Especially in spring and fall, hotels and morning tours fill up first. Choose free cancellation.
05
🏊 Plan a Rest Day
After long hikes and drives, for example, we skipped the North Rim and spent an afternoon at the pool. Best decision of the trip.
06
📖 Sign In, Sign Out
At the Wire Pass Trailhead, sign the trail register with your destination and an emergency contact, and sign out when you are back.

Book Tours and Activities

We booked our Peekaboo and Great Chamber UTV tour on GetYourGuide*. I can warmly recommend it, especially with the 8:30 AM start for the best light and fewer crowds.

Book Your Accommodation

For Kanab I use Booking.com*. For example, our hotel was the SpringHill Suites by Marriott Kanab*. I also cross check on Hotels.com* and Expedia*. Alternatively, for cabins and vacation rentals, check Vrbo*. Compare rates on Kayak*, and when the big sites show sold out, I check Agoda*.

Book Your Flights and Rental Car

For most travelers, however, Las Vegas is the closest big airport, about three and a half hours away. For flights and rental cars, I also compare on Kayak*. If The Wave or Peekaboo are on your list, an SUV makes life easier.

Kanab Utah: Frequently Asked Questions

🏞️ Is there a national park in Kanab?

Kanab itself is not a national park, but it is surrounded by them. Zion’s east entrance is about 35 minutes away, Bryce Canyon about an hour and a half, and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon is also within reach. Right around town you also find the Grand Staircase Escalante and Vermilion Cliffs national monuments, home to The Wave.

🚗 How far is Kanab from Bryce Canyon?

In total, about 77 miles (124 km), or roughly an hour and a half by car. For example, we drove it from Bryce to Kanab and stopped at the Belly of the Dragon on the way. If you drive in from the west, you also pass the red rock arches of Red Canyon.

✨ What are some unique things to do in Kanab?

Without a doubt, our favorites were hiking The Wave, driving our own buggy to Peekaboo Slot Canyon and the Great Chamber, and walking through the Belly of the Dragon, a ribbed tunnel under Highway 89. Also, for something different, the Coral Pink Sand Dunes and Best Friends Animal Sanctuary are great too.

📍 Where is Kanab Utah?

It lies in southern Utah, right on the Arizona border, and therefore on the edge of the Colorado Plateau. By car, Las Vegas is about three and a half hours away, so it is the easiest airport.

🏜️ What is Kanab Utah known for?

Above all, as a base for The Wave, slot canyons like Peekaboo, the Coral Pink Sand Dunes and day trips to Zion and Bryce Canyon.

📅 How many days do you need in Kanab?

At least three nights. With a fourth, however, add Zion or the sand dunes.

🏨 Where should I stay in Kanab?

Along Center Street, close to restaurants. For example, we stayed at the SpringHill Suites, almost next door to the visitor center.

🚙 Do I need a 4WD in Kanab?

Not for the town or the national parks, but for many highlights. So book a UTV tour for Peekaboo and use a high clearance vehicle for House Rock Valley Road.
