The Best Oahu Hikes I’ve Actually Done
The best Oahu hikes are short enough for beginners and dramatic enough for everyone else. You don’t need technical gear or a full day for most of these, just an early alarm and a decent pair of shoes.
These are the best Oahu hikes I’ve actually done myself across eight trips, including the one that gets recommended constantly online but that I personally think isn’t worth your time.

Officially the Kaiwa Ridge Trail, this is my personal favorite on the island. It’s steep but short, around 20 minutes up to the first pillbox, an old World War II bunker that now doubles as a lookout point. At the top you get a view over Lanikai Beach, the two Mokulua islands offshore, and the full curve of the Windward Coast. Go at sunrise if you can, both for the light and to avoid the crowds that build up later in the morning.

The North Shore’s answer to the Lanikai Pillbox Hike. This short climb above Pupukea leads to two more WWII-era bunkers, with the lower one, sometimes called the Peace Sign Pillbox, offering a sweeping view over the North Shore, all the way out to the world famous Banzai Pipeline. Unlike Lanikai, this one is best done in the evening. It’s one of the best sunset spots on the island, with surfers visible below if the swell is running. The trail is short at under a mile and a half round trip, but the one hill is steep and can get muddy after rain, so bring shoes with grip and a headlamp for the walk back down.

A completely different mood from the coastal hikes on this list. The Manoa Falls Trail takes you through dense rainforest, past bamboo groves and banyan roots, to a 100 foot waterfall at the end. It’s short, well shaded, and usually muddy, so wear shoes you don’t mind getting dirty. This is the hike I recommend when someone wants to see the jungle side of Oahu, not just the beaches.

Diamond Head is the classic first timer hike, and I did it exactly once, on my very first trip to Oahu. The summit sits around 760 feet up, with a wide view over Waikiki and the South Shore. Non-residents need an advance, time-slotted parking reservation, or you can walk in from the bus stop on Diamond Head Road if you don’t want to deal with that. Either way, get there early, this is genuinely Hawaii’s most crowded trail once the gates open. It’s worth doing once, especially if it’s your first trip, but I haven’t felt the need to repeat it on any of my later visits.

Fully paved with a gentle incline, which makes it the easiest and most family friendly hike on this list. It leads to a lookout over the turquoise water of the Windward Coast, with the lighthouse below and Rabbit Island offshore. It’s also one of the most popular sunrise hikes on the island, for locals and visitors alike. Go early, it gets crowded and hot by midday since there’s very little shade along the way.

Koko Head shows up on every Oahu hiking list, and I get why it’s popular for the view and the bragging rights, but I’d genuinely skip it. It climbs over 1,000 old railway ties from a WWII-era tramway, brutal on the knees both up and down. Locals hike it as a fitness challenge at sunrise or sunset, and it offers a similar view to Makapuu with a fraction of the effort required there. Unless you’re specifically chasing the challenge, I wouldn’t bother.
Frequently Asked Questions About the Best Oahu Hikes
What is the easiest hike on Oahu?
The Makapuu Point Lighthouse Trail is the easiest of the well known hikes, since it’s fully paved with a gentle incline. Manoa Falls is also beginner friendly, though it can be muddy underfoot.
Do I need a reservation for Diamond Head?
Yes. Diamond Head State Monument requires an advance, time-slotted reservation. Book the earliest slot you can to avoid crowds and heat.
Is Koko Head Crater Trail worth doing?
It depends what you’re after. It’s a genuinely tough climb up old railway ties with a good view at the top, but Makapuu offers a similar view with far less effort. I’d only recommend it if the challenge itself is the point for you.
What is the best hike on Oahu for sunset?
The Ehukai Pillbox Trail on the North Shore. It’s short, faces west, and overlooks the Banzai Pipeline, making it one of the best sunset spots on the island.
Final Thoughts on the Best Oahu Hikes
None of these hikes require a full day or serious gear, which is part of what makes Oahu such an easy island to explore on foot. If you only have time for one, make it the Lanikai Pillbox Hike at sunrise. It’s the one I keep going back for, trip after trip.
