This Oahu 5 day itinerary comes from the first time you land in Hawaii, when everything is new and you want to see as much as possible. That’s exactly the trip I took twice, once pairing Oahu with Maui and once pairing it with Kauai. Oahu is the easiest of the islands to fly into from the mainland US, which makes it the natural first stop before hopping to a second island.
This Oahu 5 day itinerary is built around that exact trip. Five days is enough to see the highlights without feeling rushed, as long as you know what to prioritize. Here’s exactly how I’d spend it as a first timer.

My Oahu 5 Day Itinerary for First Timers
This itinerary works whether you’re spending all 5 days on Oahu or using it as the first half of a two island trip. Base yourself in Waikiki and rent a car on day one, you’ll need it for most of this list.
Day 1: Arrival and Waikiki
Depending on when you land, get checked into a hotel right in Waikiki so you can walk everywhere for the rest of the evening. Stroll through the streets of Waikiki and catch sunset at Waikiki Beach. Watching the surfers catch their last wave of the day as the sky turns orange is one of those simple moments that sets the tone for the whole trip.

Get to the Diamond Head trailhead early in the morning, before the tour buses arrive. Spend the rest of the morning back at Waikiki Beach, then head to Ala Moana Center in the afternoon, the largest open air shopping center on the island, for some shopping and a proper meal.

Reservations for Diamond Head State Monument are required in advance and time-slotted. Book the earliest slot you can get.
Day 3: Circle Island Tour
This is the big day, with stops all along the Windward Coast and up to the North Shore. Head out early and take the Pali Highway over the mountains, stopping at the Nuʻuanu Pali Lookout on the way. The view opens up suddenly over the entire Windward Coast, and it’s a dramatic first look at the other side of the island before you’ve even started the Lanikai hike. From there, continue to the Lanikai Pillbox Hike at sunrise, for the view over Lanikai Beach, the green mountains behind it, and the two small islands offshore. Spend an hour relaxing at Lanikai Beach itself, then continue to Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden in Kaneohe, a free and quiet garden with the Koolau mountains as a backdrop. If you have time, the Byodo-In Temple is nearby too, though I’ll be honest that between the entry fee and parking, it’s an optional add rather than a must.
Keep driving north and stop for photos at Kualoa, where Mokoliʻi Island, better known as Chinaman’s Hat, sits just offshore. On the way to the North Shore, you’ll pass the famous food trucks, shrimp trucks included, so grab lunch there. Spend a couple of hours at Sunset Beach or Waimea Bay, then make a stop at Laniakea Beach, better known as Turtle Beach, where green sea turtles regularly come up onto the sand. Finish the day with a stroll through Haleiwa town, which has some genuinely beautiful little souvenir shops worth browsing, before heading back to Waikiki.
Day 4: Kualoa Ranch
You caught a glimpse of Kualoa from the road yesterday, today you actually stop. Kualoa Ranch offers a genuinely exciting day: movie location tours through the filming spots of Jurassic Park and Lost, ATV and off-road adventures through the valley, horseback riding with views of the Koʻolau mountains, or a relaxed afternoon at Secret Island, the ranch’s private beach area.
Day 5: Last Beach Day and Departure
Depending on your flight time, spend one last relaxed morning at Waikiki Beach before heading to the airport. If you’re continuing on to Maui or Kauai like I did, this is a good moment to appreciate how much you managed to fit into just 5 days before the next island begins.

Is 5 days enough for a first trip to Oahu?
Yes, especially if you’re combining Oahu with a second Hawaiian island. But even after 8 trips of my own, there’s always something new to discover on Oahu, so don’t expect to see it all in one visit.
Do I need a rental car for this itinerary?
Yes. The Windward Coast, North Shore, and Kualoa Ranch are all outside of walking distance from Waikiki, so a rental car is essential for this itinerary.
Should I combine Oahu with another Hawaiian island on a first trip?
